The iconic Roulette wheel is one of the most potent and widely recognised symbols of the casino. While the various betting permutations in roulette can appear complicated at first, the core rules of the game are simplicity itself.
Roulette features a moveable inner wheel containing numbered and coloured pockets. The croupier sets this wheel spinning in one direction, and then sets a white ball rolling in the opposite direction around the outer ball track. The ball track is stationary, as is the slanted section just below known as the bottom track, which runs around the circumference of the inner wheel. When the ball loses momentum it slides down the bottom track, and will usually bounce around a bit before falling into a pocket in the inner wheel, determining the outcome of the game.
In European roulette, there are 37 pockets. The numbers 1 to 36 are either red or black, while the zero is green. In American roulette, the addition of an extra double zero pocket, ‘00’, gives 38 pockets. Players can place bets on the any single number, or combinations of numbers. It is the various combination bets that present the most complicated aspect of the game for the newcomer. Bets are made by placing chips on the layout, a cloth betting area next to wheel.
At the centre of the layout is a grid, with each box representing a pocket on the inner wheel. Surrounding this grid are other boxes containing different options for betting on groups of numbers.
The two main categories of roulette wagers are thus called inside and outside bets. Inside bets are placed on one or more numbers inside the grid. The simplest wager is called the straight or straight up bet, which is made by placing a chip or chips in the centre of one number square. Many players place several straight up bets each game. A split bet on two adjoining numbers, with the chip placed on the line between the squares, is perhaps the next most obvious inside bet. Other inside bets involve combinations of numbers determined by the layout, such as the Street, which is a bet on three numbers in a single horizontal line on the grid. Outside bets include Red or Black, odd or even, 1-18 or 19 to 36, or which of the three Dozens (1-12, 13-24, 25-36) the ball will land on. For more information on different inside and outside bets, see the Roulette Glossary.
The return following a win depends on the type of bet you place. Since straight up bets have the longest odds, the return is highest if your number comes in – 35 to 1. The shorter odds bets, like red or black, are even money, which means that a win will double your stake. Each type of inside and outside bet offers a specific payout.
