American Wheel – roulette wheel with 38 pockets, which include the two zeroes ‘0’ and ‘00’, and the numbers 1 to 36.
Called bets – call or called bets are properly known as announced bets. These bets are also colloquially known as ‘French Bets’. There are five types of called bets: Neighbours (Voisins); Neighbours of Zero (Grand Voisins du Zéro); Zero Game (Jeu zero, or more commonly the German zero spiel); Tier, or Thirds of the Wheel (Tiers du Cylinder), and Orphans (Orphelins).
Column Bet - a bet placed in the ‘2 to 1’ box beside the three columns, or rows of 12 numbers on the table layout.
Corner Bet – A bet placed on four numbers with one or more chip.
Dolly – The name given to the marker placed on the table layout in American roulette to display the winning number. Such markers are also used in the European roulette played in UK casinos.
Dozen Bet – An outside bet on either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd dozen.
En Prison – A French roulette rule sometimes used in the European roulette played in most UK casinos. En Prison applies only to even money, outside bets. If the ball lands on zero, the player has the option to take back half the stake, or leave it ‘En Prison’ (in prison) for the next spin - if this results in another zero, the full stake is then lost.
European wheel - roulette wheel with 37 pockets, which includes just one zero, and the numbers 1 to 36.
Even Money Bet – a bet that pays out 2 to 1 when you win, doubling your stake.
French bets - the colloquial term for announced bets that cover certain sections of the roulette wheel, also known as called bets.
High or Low Bet – an outside bet placed on either the box labelled ‘1 to 18’, or ’19 to 36’. A win results in an even money payout.
Inside Bet – any bet placed on the numbers inside the grid on the table layout. Includes straight up (single) bets, and combinations of numbers like split bets, and street and corner bets.
La Partage – The same in every way to the ‘En Prison’ rule, except there is no option to leave half the stake ‘En Prison’ for another spin. Half the stake is simply lost when the ball lands on zero. La Partage applies only to even money, outside bets. Neighbours – The commonly used term for the called bet known in French as ‘Voisins’. A Neighbours bet covers a number plus the two numbers on either side, thus requiring 5 chips. Announced, for example, as ‘seven and the neighbours’.
Orphelins – the French for Orphans. An announced or called bet on the 8 numbers not covered by the Voisins du Zero or Tiers du Cylindre announced bets. Called Orphans because these numbers are ‘split apart’, appearing in 2 sections of the wheel. These are the numbers 1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31, 34.
Outside Bet – a bet on the boxes on the table layout outside the number grid. Outside bets include Dozens, Red or Black, High or Low, Odd or Even, and Column Bets.
Pay out – the amount of money paid to the player after a win.
Racetrack Bets – another name for called bets.
Six Way Split – a bet made by placing a chip between two columns (of 3 numbers), covering the 6 numbers in those two columns.
Split Bet – Also known as a 2 way split. A bet made by placing a chip on the line between two squares, covering both numbers. Straight up Bet – A made by placing a chip in the centre of the square representing a single number.
Street Bet - Also known as 3 Way Street, this bet is made by placing a chip at the end of a three number column (or row), covering the three numbers in that column or row.
Tiers du cylinder – the French for Tier Bet, covering a third of the wheel. A called bet on the numbers roughly opposite those covered by Voisins du Zero. The numbers covered are 5, 8, 10, 11, 13, 16, 23, 24, 27, 30, 33, and 36.
Voisins du Zero – the French for Neighbours of Zero. A called bet on the 17 numbers closest to zero on the roulette wheel. The numbers covered are 0, 2, 3, 4, 7, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 29, 32, and 35.
Zero spiel - Jeu zero in French, or Zero game in English. This called bet is like a scaled back version of Voisins du Zero, and covers the numbers 0, 3, 12, 15, 26, 32, 35.
