In a land-based casino, the Blackjack table is always a semi-oval arc with a felt covering. The dealer positions himself behind the flat part of the table at the back, and the players are seated around the oval portion. The number of player’s seats are usually somewhere between 5 and 7, and are demarcated by rectangles on the felt.
There should always be a sign at a casino Blackjack table that indicates the type of game being played, the minimum and maximum bets available and any rules associated with that specific table. Rules can vary (since there is a number of variants on the game) but usually the tables are differentiated by their minimum and maximum bets, to allow players to play for stakes befitting their wallet! Busy casinos may ramp up the table minimum.
Now you know what to look out for on approaching a table, what of the etiquette once you’ve sat down? The main thing to be aware of is how to behave with the dealer. Once you’ve placed cash on the table, the dealer will exchange it for chips. He can not take money directly from your hand – you must drop the cash on the felt, and he will take it and drop it into a slot.
The Shoe
The “Shoe” is an oblong device, usually wooden or plastic, in which the cards are deposited and dealt from. The shoe will usually hold between one and six decks of cards.
As soon as there is at least one player at the table, the game can commence. Additional players can join at any point (once the current hand is finished). The cards are dealt clockwise from the dealer’s left to right.
