Baccarat Glossary

Read up on baccarat terminology here!

Let’s take a look at all the terms you might come across when playing Baccarat. Use this as your quick referral guide when you start playing live Baccarat online. Additionally, impress your friends with the French knowledge you’ve gleaned from Castle Casino, as most of the terms are French (as per the origin of the game, as people who have read our Baccarat History guide will know!).

Baccarat – The titular score of the game - zero. The worst hand a Baccarat player can have.

Baccarat en Banque - A variation on the game with only two player positions.

Banker/Player Bet – Fairly self-explanatory. Any bet not on Tie.

"Banco!" – This is cried out when a player opts for betting his entire money. In the Beatles movie A Hard Day’s Night, Ringo famously got it wrong at a swanky Baccarat table, by shouting “Bingo!” instead!

Carte – Say this to request a card from the dealer.

Coup - A round of Baccarat.

Croupier - The dealer.

Chemin-de-fer - French for "Railroad." The European version of the game where one player plays the bank, deals all the cards, and takes all bets.

Face Cards - Jack, Queen or King of any suit. Also known as Picture Cards.

House Edge – The statistical advantage the casino has over the players. In Baccarat, the house-edge is more favourable for the player than in any other casino game.

Ladderman - The casino’s employee. He supervises the Baccarat table.

Le Grande – A 9! The best hand in Baccarat!

Loss bet/Fade - A bet in opposition to the bank.

Mini-baccarat - A variation of Baccarat in which a smaller table than usual is used (and less players).

Muck – When eight card decks are used - 416 in total.

Natural - When the two cards total 8 or 9.

Palette – Usually made of wood, this is a tool used to move cards on the table.

Petite - When the card total is 8.

Shills - A young lady, who works for the casino, used to lure players to the Baccarat table.

Shooter - Another nickname for the bank.

Standoff - When the banker and the player tie.

Super Pan Nine - A variation of Baccarat.
